Inclusive Community
United Church of Christ
The United Church of Christ is a community of faith that seeks to respond to
the Gospel of Jesus Christ in word and deed. The UCC was founded in 1957 as the union of several different Christian churches.  Our motto—"that they may all be one"—is Jesus' prayer for the unity of the church. The UCC is one of the most diverse Christian churches in the United States.

What we believe

  • That they may all be one. (John 17:21)
  • In essentials unity, in non-essentials diversity, in all things charity.
  • The unity of the church is not of its own making.
  • Testimonies of faith rather than tests of faith.
  • There is yet more light and truth to break forth from God's holy word.
  • The Priesthood of All Believers.
  • Responsible Freedom.
The UCC was the first
  • Mainline Church to take a public stand against slavery (1700)
  • Church to initiate the defense of the Amistad captives, supporting their Supreme Court case and their freedom (1839)
  • To ordain a woman to ministry, Antoinette Brown (1853)
  • To ordain a native American in the 1700's
  • To ordain an African American in the 1800's
  • To ordain an openly gay person, William Johnson (1972)
  • Protestant Church to appoint a Catholic Pastor, with full standing, to one of its own churches - The Rev. Dr. Anthony T. Padovano Pastor of The Inclusive Community (1986)
